When I see him gazing longingly out the window

& hear him purr then I know Rocky is back!

Rocky the Raccoon visits nearly every night. He loves the chopped corn & graham crackers I leave for him. He even comes all the way up to the window and peeks in to say hello to Elvis.

Rocky had the patio & the corn & the graham crackers & Elvis all to himself. That is until...the terror of the neighborhood visited! Rocky tried to be friends but Mr. Opossum is friends with no one!

The reality of defeat! But he'll always have Elvis waiting at the window...

The Pioneer Woman Visits Nashville!

Ever heard of The Pioneer Woman?

She's the newest hit in the blog world.

She blogs about her daily life on an Oklahoma ranch -

that includes stories about her husband & children

& lots of recipes & photos.

Last month The Pioneer Woman - aka Ree Drummond

stopped in Nashville on her whirl-wind book tour.

And did Nashville show up to meet her!

Fans stood in line (some for hours)

to have pictures taken & books signed.

I was no exception.

My partner in crime that night was another devoted fan -

Kristen of Kristen Steele Photography.

I was introduced to The Pioneer Woman via daughter Sarah.

Although Sarah couldn't be at the book signing,

Ree kindly & enthusiastically spoke to Sarah on the phone.

So thanks Pioneer Woman!

For visiting Nashville, teaching Sarah how to cook

& inspiring us with your fabulous life on the ranch!

Tilly the Turkey

I will not be eating turkey this Thanksgiving.

And here's why....

Meet Tilly.

Tilly has called our yard home from a safe distance

for most of the summer.

Until last month when she decided to move closer.

Now she's on our front porch every morning.

watching the world wake up,

listening to the interstate noise

and checking out the airplanes as they fly over.

Then she moves to the back courtyard & deck.

There she eats the birdseed & cracked corn we leave for her.

She looks in the windows & stares at the cats.

And the cats stare back.

She terrorizes Oscar the cat when he's outside

where she gets very very close.

She either loves him & wants to be friends

or she hates him & wants to fight.

Either way, Oscar wants no part of a relationship.

I think she's lonely.

But she's also getting free meals.

A city turkey living the easy life.

After a busy day of eating & watching the cats,

she settles in for the night in her favorite tree.

My mother-in-law is the original Martha Stewart. For dinner recently one warm evening, this is what she served. Wine, olives, an assortment of cheeses, salad, bread & butter & berries with thick cream for dessert. Simple, delicious, beautiful. Don't you agree? A wonderful way to say goodbye to Tennessee summer evenings.

Mary Travers made up the beautiful blonde part of the Beatnik group Peter, Paul & Mary. As a very little girl, I remember lying on the hardwood floor in front of one of those huge black & white televisions watching her sing. As I got older, I looked forward to their Christmas specials or one of the rare performances on PBS. Mary Travers was a wonderful part of my childhood as was their famous song, 'Puff the Magic Dragon'. Thanks Mary

Celebrate Woodstock turning 40! Too young to have been there but I do love the music! You know this song originally by Joni Mitchell. But listen to it by Matthews Southern Comfort (not Southern at all but born & raised in England). It was #1 in England in '70 & was a minor hit over here in '71. I love to travel. I love meeting the people, listening to their accents, eating the food, reading about the history & the cultural of the area. I would love to have summer & winter homes scattered all across the world, but chances are slim that I’ll ever have that home in the Highlands of Scotland or that flat in London. That’s ok. My acre & a half inside the Nashville city limits is just fine with me. This town (even though Nashville & surrounding area has over a half million, we still call is a town) is so diverse in music. We can go to a Symphony or Opera most any day of the week. But when Nashvillians are ready to sit back & soak up the music that made the town famous then it’s time to head down 12th Ave to The Station Inn. Now that’s some top rated music - country style! The Station Inn is known for pure, perfect Bluegrass/Appalachian Music. I’m not talking about the newly invented Pop Folk Anyone Can Play a Fiddle And Call It Bluegrass music. I’m talking real Kick-Ass My Heart Is Broken Poetic Heartbeat Of America It’s Been A Hard Life But I’m Hanging In There music. And on Monday nights you get an extra helping of it with The Time Jumpers (so called because they play only timeless music). They’re not Bluegrass but an interesting mix of Country, Texas Swing & even a little hint of Big Band. All shows are at 9 so to get a seat it’s a must to be there at least by 8. Order a Station Inn pizza & a pitcher of beer then get ready to hear talent that comes as naturally to the musicians as breathing. Nashville has been called a ‘songwriter’s town’ & a ‘musician’s town’ because both are really the pulse of the music industry. That’s why entertainers of ALL genres of music from all over the world are migrating to Nashville & have been secretly coming for years. They know they can get the best song lyrics & the best back-up artists here - & all without the egos to have to deal with. So the next time you’re traveling through, stop over & visit the famous Station Inn any night of the week. You can listen to a sample on their website at www.stationinn.com or listen to what I recorded. Every few months we need a dose of The Station Inn so we went last week for a fix. Just made it in time before standing room only. Then we sat back in our chairs & marveled at how much talent is living & hiding in this town. Even if you're not a fan of Country or Texas Swing, you can certainly appreciate the talented musicians & fine voices. Enjoy & let me know what you think. The Station Inn is a slightly dumpy 'hole-in-the-wall' place where the walls are papered with old yellowed posters of past music legends & where the building is surrounded by lounge restaurants, up-scale bars & high-rise condominiums in an area called 'the gulch'. Because The Station Inn was the only building in the area until 6 years ago, the owners have assured the loyal fans (some have been coming for decades) they will not change to keep up with the neighborhood. And surprisingly, 'The Gulch' neighborhood wants to keep The Station Inn just as it is. Farmers Market

I love a Farmers Market.
Be it one in a church parking lot on Main Street or a cluster of tobacco-chewing part-time farmers with produce in their pick-up trucks in Tiny Town, USA or a large one that takes up a city block. I love to walk around with my camera & snap pictures of the people buying a weeks worth of whatever & the busy vendors trying to sell them some more.
I love the smells. Even the smell of over ripe cantaloupes & watermelons.
But most of all I love the colors.
Vivid colors that I would paint IF I could paint.
So instead I take pictures.

~Summer Bell Peppers & Tomato Relish~
3 large red bell peppers
3 large green bell peppers
6 tablespoons olive oil
3/4 pound plum tomatoes, seeded, chopped
6 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

~Preheat oven to 400°F

~Brush bell peppers with 2 tablespoons oil & place on baking sheet.

Roast peppers until tender & begin to brown, turning occasionally, about 35 minutes.

Cool peppers 5-10 minutes. Then peel, seed & slice.
Heat remaining 4 tablespoons of oil in large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add tomatoes and garlic. Sauté until tomatoes soften, about 5 minutes. Then add peppers. Sauté about 3 minutes.

Add cilantro & vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.

~Serve Bell Pepper & Tomato Relish Tennessee style with pinto beans seasoned w/Tennessee country ham, corn bread, fried okra, green beans & fresh creamed corn.

Now after that feast you should plan something light for desert.

Not!

~Fruit & Creme~

Pound Cake

Heavy Whipping Cream or Half and Half

sliced Strawberries, Peaches, Blackberries, Blueberries

Sugar

~Make a Pound Cake or buy one frozen at the grocery store (they're actually really good).

Cube it & place cubed cake in pretty glasses - why not use you're best crystal - you know, those glasses you've not used in 30 years.

Then layer washed sliced/cubed fruit.

Something colorful like blackberries (blackberries will be kinda sour so set them aside in a bowl with lots of sugar before adding to other fruit), strawberries, peaches, blueberries & plums.

Next comes the good stuff...

Pour HEAVY whipping cream on top of everything then sprinkle with sugar & top with a sprig of mint.

Nothing tastes better & it'll be beautifully displayed in your antique crystal glasses.

In January, the Nashville Farmers Market outside shed is empty.

In February there's a Spring light at the end of the Winter tunnel with a little activity.

March is a teaser. Making me think that Winter has finally left.

Just as I start to dream of seeds & bulbs I'm reminded that March dies a slow death in Nashville with one last drop in temperature. But toward the last of the month & just as I think I'll never see warm weather again, it seems that someone switches on a light & Glory Hallelujah Spring is here!

And so it begins. Summer's bounty brought to you by Mother Nature & some hard-working farmers.

It may be late summer now but things are still bumping at the Nashville Farmers Market.

And I bet at yours too.

#9 Air McNair

Steve McNair was a Mississippi boy who called Nashville home. He loved Nashville because he said it was a city where he could “be himself” In fact, when he left a couple of years ago to play for Baltimore he kept his house here saying he would be back & also said he would always be a Tennessee Titan - which got him into a little trouble with Baltimore.

He came back after retiring last year & would be seen almost daily in town.

Nashville loved Steve.

He was rarely asked for an autograph (in Nashville people that ask for autographs are usually out-of towners) but instead, was given a shout-out or a high-five by people which was always returned with that beautiful Steve McNair smile. I almost ran over him once.

Seriously! He was crossing a street downtown & I turned my head just in time to see him walk in front of the car - just as I slammed on the brakes. He flashed me that smile & kept walking! Steve was one of the top charity fund raisers in the NFL. Just last year, out of all the NFL players, he was given the top charity award. After Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast & very recently when a tornado damaged a Tennessee town, Steve was there helping & giving.

He was a down-home country boy.

Titan football will never be the same.

And from this football fanatic, thanks for the Tennessee Titan memories.

New Orleans Weekend

Ever visited New Orleans in late June?

Yes? Then you're as crazy as I am.

If you haven't. Don't.

You try as hard as you can to soak in the culture

but you only succeed in getting soaked.

So still hell bent on visiting?

Then you might enjoy some highlights of my resent visit...

~On Friday we had dinner at Bourbon Street Restaurant.

Baked Redfish topped with Crabmeat and special Cajun sauce. mmmmmmmmm.

The restaurant is owned by the Brennen family so you know it'll be great food & great atmosphere.

And it was.

Also had my first Streetcar there. I think I'm not a fan of Bourbon. But might have to drink another one on my next trip down just to make sure.

Then Husband & I took a stroll...

As we walked along the Mississippi River I hummed this classic tune...

Then we wandered around Jackson Square...

and saw that even the horses needed a cool down...

To close the night we stopped at world famous

Cafe du Monde for Beignets. Normally served with coffee but too hot for that so water instead. Next morning, breakfast was at the Old Coffee Pot Restaurant on St. Peter to fuel up.

not sure why, but i love funky brick walls...

The Lost Bread was great at the Old Coffee Pot. And the eggs, and the bacon, and the home fries, and the biscuits!!! They have a great little court yard if you're smart enough to go in the winter, spring or fall.

Good service - Great food.

Then on to the Audubon Nature Insectarium on Canal.

Set aside 2 hours for this. You'll walk in thinking it's for kids, which it is, but it's also for big kids. Certainly you have to love butterflies & bugs or at least find them fascinating. Otherwise don't waste your time.

Later, around Jackson Square we found these guys.

The kid sang - loud & proud!

The more he sang, the more mournful he sounded.

I think the misery in his voice was from having to sing

in the hot sweltering heat.

So we tipped him.

And lots of other people did too.

Whatever he made in tips he didn't make enough.

Poor kid. I wanted to take him home with me.

Our last stop was at Remoulade's on Bourbon Street

for Muffalettas then made our way back to our room. Wandering around we saw several street acts.

This 'construction man' was the best.

He didn't move one bit.

Not one tiny bit.

Sweat poured down his face & in his eyes & he still didn't move.

We didn't tip him. We were all tipped out. Nothing left.

I felt bad taking his picture then not tipping him but I did it anyway.

Sorry construction man.

One last meal on Sunday morning at The Coffee Pot again before heading back to NashVegas. We enjoyed our busy little weekend in NOLA. But my next visit will be in the cold dead winter - unless I get another summer wedding invitation!!!

Women Warriors !

I realize that it's easy for me to sit comfortably in my home in a country that guarantees my safety & freedom & comment on the news as it's happening in another part of the world - far from my own insignificant tiny corner. But Wow! How brave are the Women of Iran!?! When women stand together the world takes notice. They become lionesses. I think we're hearing a low roar in Iran & I for one am very proud of these women & their courage. So from my little corner in Nashville, Tennessee USA, I'd like to give a shout to the WOMEN WARRIORS OF IRAN... You Go Girls !!!

then watch a concert in Titan Stadium

before calling it a night?

kick-off concert outside the arena on broadway - downtown Nashville

Then the next morning pack your cut offs & sandals,

your sleeping bag & tent, & head down the interstate a few miles to hang out at the Bonnaroo 2009 Festival.

After a few days when you've had enough of the bugs & mud, you can head back, check back into a hotel & get a quick shower just in time to catch the late show at the Grand Ole Opry.

Ice Cream Kinda Day

Today I ate my weight in ice cream for tomorrow I start running !

The 24th annual Miss Martha's Ice Cream Crankin' is an ice cream lover's dream.

Always located on the grounds of 1rst Presbyterian Church, Miss Martha's Ice Cream Crankin' benefits the Martha O'Bryan Center. Almost every Presbyterian Church or some members in Davidson & Williamson County enter their ice cream as a church or an individual.

This is how is goes:

You buy a ticket (this year it was $10 early then $13 the day of). With a ticket then you get a small cup & a little wooden spoon. And then you get to walk around & sample as much as you want of over 100 different ice cream recipes. Ribbons are given for categories & after the Blue Ribbon is awarded, Purity Dairies takes that recipe & makes the ice cream to sell in grocery stores.

I'm really not an ice cream kinda gal but this is fun - except for the heat of course.
